Corn Palace - Mitchell, South Dakota

Today, corn is thought of as a replacement fuel for oil. The Corn Palace in Mitchell, however, shows corn in a different perspective, from an artistic point of view. Very interesting stop at a very unique location. Well worth the side trip.

The Story behind the picture
This building is actually made with "corn" products, mostly husks.

Badlands National Park - South Dakota

The drive thru this park had many stops to show the various aspects of the park itself. The eroded formations together with the tall praire grass shows quite well why the area is known as the "Badlands". Enjoyable, but after 30 miles enough was enough.

Amazing colors represented in the sandstone formations.

Crazy Horse Memorial - South Dakota

This carving into one of the foothills in South Dakota can be considered "under construction". It is however, much larger than the sculptures at Mount Rushmore, and when completed will provide a fitting monument to one of America's greatest Indian chieftans. The facility is more commercial, with good viewing capabilities, museum and store to purchase products.

The Story behind the picture
The sheer size of this sculpture was what impressed me most and much of our time spent here was viewing many of the exhibits that showed how construction was progressing. Not like Mount Rushmore where it is a fait accompli, this sculpture had many more years before completion before it gains the similar stature. This is a private enterprise and not part of the state or national park system so dollars are more readily sought for, from customers entering the exhibit.

Mount Rushmore - South Dakota

One of the most famous sites in America. A fitting location to portray some of America`s famous presidents. It is very difficult to not having a strong sense of nationalism while in the gaze of these past presidents. The walkway from the park entrance to the viewing area of the presidents, while not overbearing, is steeped in history.

Very impressed by the park`s cleanliness. There actually was a stillness in the air as one viewed from the viewing platform.
